joe biden and paul ryan went head-to-head in their only face-off. they clashed on almost two issues. who won? two polls gave two different views. one showed ryan 48% to 44% ahead. cbs news' flash poll gave biden the win with 50% compared to 31% for ryan and 19% called the debate a tie. for a look at some of the highlights, we go to steve handelsman at the debate sight in danville, kentucky. good morning. >> reporter: good morning from danville, kentucky where they differ sharply on practically all the big issues. these are smart, well informed politicians. paul rye yand and joe biden had

reason to feel good last night. a long time democratic insider versus a republican young gun whose ticket has new momentum. mitt romney was watching, barack obama, too. the moderator from abc. they tangled on iran. >> they are closer to a nuclear weapon. >> we will not allow the iranians to get a nuclear weapon. you gonna go to war? is that what you want to do now? >> we want to prevent war. >> what about 47% of americans feeling entitled to benefits. >> i think the vice president knows sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way. >> but i always say what i mean. so does romney. >> what about the obama stimulus, the recovery? >> job growth in september was slower than august and august

tuesday in long island, new york. andrea mitchell led the truth squad with a fact check. she started with the deadly september 11th attack in benghazi. paul ryan accusing them of protecting u.s. personnel. >> what we should not be doing is rejecting claims for calls for more security in barracks and marines. we need marines in benghazi when the ambassador says we need them. the requests were not honored. >> biden called the deaths a tragedy. the obama administration did not know they had been asking for more security help. >> we weren't told they wanted more security. we did not know they wanted more security. by the way, at the time, we were told exactly, we said exactly what the intelligence community

told us that they knew. that was the assessment. >> there was an assessment, but the state department did know from videos that requests had been made and were turned down. a state department official acknowledged testifying on capitol hill yesterday. there was a sharp disagreement over medicare. biden charged ryan's plan would raise out of pocket costs for seniors. >> use your common sense, who do you trust on this, a man who introduced a bill to raise it $6400 a year knowing it and passing it and romney saying he signed it or may in the present? >> ryan objected. >> that statistic was misleading. more importantly, this is what politicians do when they don't have a record to run on. try to scare people from voting for you. >> on this, biden is right. the congressional budget office

said it would force most future seniors increased costs out of pocket. whether a revised plan would cost more is not certain. >> that was andrea mitchell reporting. here is a look at other news going around america today. we are going to begin with a collision that almost killed three people. a new york city ambulance was responding to a call when an suv barrelled right into it. the impact was so powerful, it caused the ambulance to topple over. the suv driver suffered severe neck injuries. all expected to survive. look at this sight in florida. it's kind of cute. the firefighters had to use a special oxygen mask to save two birds. they were rescued from a raging house fire. there were three cats that did not make it out. finally, you are not going to believe what washed up on a florida beach. a giant eyeball. it's the size of a softball.

it's turned over to florida wildlife officials. it has marine biologists stumped. they are not sure what sea creature has such a big eye. it could be a giant squid or october put. it is big and it is blue. that's for sure. now, for a look at the national weather, we turn to meteorologist bill karins. he probably has a conspiracy theory. why would i think that? >> government. not sure which one but it's a government ploy somewhere. keep the kids out of the water. good morning, everyone. we have active weather that's going to happen. thunderstorms pushing through the nashville area and tennessee. a weak storm with cold, chilly rain. this is the beginning of an active weather pattern. if you are in the middle of the country, new thunderstorms popping up here. areas of new mexico. after a quiet first two weeks of october, we are going to have

the first weather event starting tomorrow. here is a look at the storms as they push through the area. light rain now. they are racing through central portions of tennessee. the drive on interstate 40 is the worst drive in the country with the storms crossing the interstate as we speak. near springfield, missouri, a lot of lightning strikes. near the springfield area, i'm sure that interstate is not fun, either. isolated strong storms, an area of yellow. it's tomorrow that the storm heads out to the central plains. minisevere weatherout break, possible tornadoes for iowa or missouri. keep an eye on the forecast. you have the best chance of seeing a strong storm. dallas to oklahoma city to tulsa, back to chicago, you have a chance for strong storms. for today, it's not too bad. east coast looks okay. tomorrow is the day of concern.

advanced microdevices warned global economic weakness is taking a toll on their bottom line. investors shrugged off good and bad news including weekly jobless claims. a few stocks jumped after reports of new owners said they could be bought by soft bank. defense truck maker shot up on news investor carl icahn may buy them. starting next year, walmart is going to offer employees free heart, spine transplant surgeries. the reason? walmart believes paying more to get the job done right the first time saves on complications. the u.s. postal service will raise rates on january 27 to

after expressing his design to own one, it set off a fire storm from animal activists and fans who thought he should never be allowed to have a dog. he said our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. let's get another look at the weather. bill karins is watching that. >> a lot of changing weather starting with today. in new england, a cold rain is moving through. it's from syracuse to albany and pushing through portland throughout the mid-morning to early afternoon. we'll have the showers to deal with. it's a chunk of cold air behind this. temperatures only in the 40s. tonight, areas of new england will get a hard freeze. the growing season will officially end tomorrow morning. the other big story is the huge storm in the middle of the country. this is almost like a spring-like storm. severe weather with it. a severe weather outbreak in iowa to missouri and kansas as
